The Art of the Morning Note: 30 Days of November Smiles

We love the idea of including a handwritten note in a snack or lunch box for our kids to read (or have read to them!) at school. Since we’ve also found ourselves practicing the art of telling a joke at our own kitchen table, we thought it would be a beautiful tradition to round up enough gentle, autumn-inspired humor to last all of November.

Now, let's see if we can actually write these out in time for the morning rush...

Week 1: Autumn & School Fun

  • What did the Atlantic Ocean say to the autumn leaves? Nothing, it just waved!
  • Why did the teacher wear sunglasses to school? Because her students were so bright!
  • How do coastal trees get new jobs in the fall? They have the right qua-leaf-ications!
  • What is a math teacher's favorite fall snack? A piece of pi!
  • Why did the mashed potatoes cross the road? To get to the other sides!
  • What do you get when you drop a pumpkin? Squash!
  • What did the tree say to autumn? "Leaf me alone!"

Week 2: Harbor & Sea Creatures

  • What do you call a seagull that flies over New England bays in November? A bay-gull!
  • Where do ghosts go for a coastal autumn vacation? The Boo-hamas!
  • What did the lobster wear to keep warm in the chilly Atlantic? A clam-ouflage jacket!
  • What do New England whales eat with their autumn dinner? Fish and ships!
  • What did one autumn leaf say to another? I’m falling for you!
  • How do sea monsters get around coastal Massachusetts in November? By autumn-mobile!
  • What do beach-loving pumpkins use to cross the road? A crossing gourd!

Week 3: Cranberry Bogs, School, & Pilgrims

  • Why did the cranberry turn bright red? Because it saw the turkey dressing!
  • How did the Massachusetts potatoes cross the sea to Plymouth? On gravy boats!
  • Why did the Pilgrim's pants keep falling down? Because he wore his belt buckle on his hat!
  • What do farmers wear in the fall? Har-vests!
  • If the Pilgrims were alive today, what would they be most famous for? Their age!
  • What did the ghost say to the school teacher on a chilly autumn day? "Boo-tiful work!"
  • Why did the Pilgrim sail across the ocean? Because he couldn't walk on water!

Week 4: Turkey Time & Thanksgiving Feasts

  • What sound does a coastal turkey’s phone make? "Wing, wing!"
  • Why did the turkey cross the road twice? To prove he wasn't chicken!
  • Why didn't the turkey eat any Thanksgiving dinner? Because he was already stuffed!
  • What kind of apple isn’t an apple? A pineapple!
  • Why did they let the turkey join the Thanksgiving band? Because he brought his own drumsticks!
  • What do you call a turkey the day after Thanksgiving? Lucky!
  • What is the best thing to put into a New England pumpkin pie? Your fork!
  • What kind of key unlocks a door on Thanksgiving? A tur-key!
  • What did the dinner roll say to the butter at the table? "You're on a roll!"
